Positional and Endgame Concepts

Outpost

Definition

An outpost is a square on the opponent side (rank 4-6 from your side) that: (1) is protected by your own pawn, (2) cannot be attacked by opponent pawns because no opponent pawn exists on adjacent files. A knight on an outpost is one of the strongest piece placements in the middlegame.

Usage and Example

Example: white knight on d5, defended by pawn e4, cannot be evicted because black has no pawn on c or e files. This knight dominates the position until the opponent trades with their own bishop or knight.
