Zwischenzug
Also known as:intermezzo
Definition
Zwischenzug is an in-between move inserted in the middle of an expected trade or attack sequence, usually a check, queen threat, or other tactical strike. Zwischenzug changes the opponent calculation because they must respond to the new threat before returning to the original plan.
Usage and Example
Example: opponent captures your bishop, expecting you to recapture. Instead of recapturing, you check the opponent queen first. After the queen moves, you recapture. Net result: you gain a tempo plus the queen is disrupted.

T3 Competitive Local. Zwischenzug is advanced tactical thinking requiring 3-5 half-move calculation depth. Appears in regional tournaments and FIDE rated events.
