PERCASI (Persatuan Catur Seluruh Indonesia) is the official Indonesian chess federation, established in 1948 and joined FIDE in the 1950s. PERCASI manages national ratings, official tournament sanctioning, national team selection, and FIDE coach certification. Tiered structure: PB PERCASI at center, PENGPROV at provincial level, PENGKAB at regency or city level.
Brief History of PERCASI
PERCASI was founded 17 August 1948 as Indonesia's national chess federation. The early period (1948-1960s) focused on consolidating local chess clubs and organizing the first National Championship. Joining FIDE (World Chess Federation) in the early 1950s opened Indonesia's path to Chess Olympiad and international tournaments.
The 1980s became a major momentum with Utut Adianto's achievement as Indonesia's first Grandmaster (1986). This proved that PERCASI's development system can produce GM-level players. The 2000s continued with Susanto Megaranto (GM 2004) and subsequent Indonesian GM generations.
PERCASI Organizational Structure
PERCASI structure has three tiers. At center, PB PERCASI (Executive Board) handles national policy, Indonesian team selection, and FIDE coordination. The PB PERCASI Chairman is an elected position with multi-year terms. Utut Adianto has held this position across multiple terms.
At provincial level, PENGPROV (Provincial Board) manages provincial-level tournaments (Regional Championships), regional coach training, and youth athlete development. PENGPROV Jakarta, West Java, East Java, and DI Yogyakarta are typically most active because of high chess club density.
The lowest tier PENGKAB (Regency Board) and PENGKOT (City Board) handle regency or city-level tournaments plus local clubs. Every competitive player is typically registered at their local PENGKAB or PENGKOT plus PENGPROV.
PERCASI Role for Competitive Players
For competitive players, PERCASI sanctions 4 tracks: (1) Official PERCASI national rating for regional and national championship-level tournaments, (2) FIDE rating via PERCASI-sanctioned FIDE-rated tournaments, (3) Indonesian team selection for SEA Games, Chess Olympiad, and Asian tournaments, (4) FIDE coach certification (FIDE Trainer, National Instructor) via PERCASI programs.
How to register with PERCASI: contact your local PENGKAB or PENGKOT, or directly through the PB PERCASI official website. Registration is free or nominal fee depending on region. After registering, you get a PERCASI national rating and can participate in city or provincial championships.
