Core Ideas
Pirc is a hypermodern defense that lets White have a big center, then Black breaks from the flank with c5 or e5 counter. Philosophy: "let center overextend, then punish". Less common at modern top level but remains a sound choice for flexible players.
Plan for White
Build big center with e4 + d4 + c3 system. If Black delays counter, launch kingside attack with f4-f5. Austrian Attack (4.f4) is especially aggressive.
Plan for Black
Fianchetto bishop on g7 for long-diagonal pressure on center. Break with c5 or e5 at moves 8-12. Castle fast plus queenside expansion with b5-b4.
Grandmaster Tier Context
T3 Competitive Local through T4 National. Pirc requires understanding hypermodern principles so unsuitable for beginners. Grandmaster coaches introduce Pirc as an alternative to Sicilian at T3 players who understand breaking center concept.
