Main Line

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 (Classical) dxe4 4.Nxe4 (Caro-Kann Main Line with the bishop trade system) or 3.e5 (Advance) c5

Core Ideas

Caro-Kann is like French but with the c8 bishop not trapped (can move to f5 or g4 before e6). Reputation as the most solid defense against 1.e4, used consistently by Capablanca, Karpov, Anand. Fits players who want to equalize safely without Sicilian tactical risk.

Plan for White

Classical (3.Nc3 dxe4): pressure Black pieces not yet fully developed. Advance (3.e5): close center and push kingside. Panov Attack (3.exd5 c×d5 4.c4): open position into Queen's Gambit style with IQP potential.

Plan for Black

Develop c8 bishop actively to f5 or g4 before e6. Castle fast and trade pieces to simplify. Long-term: slightly worse endgame but very solid to hold a draw.

Grandmaster Tier Context

T2 Club through T5 Master. Caro-Kann is a Grandmaster coach recommendation for beginners wanting a stable defense against 1.e4. Simple to learn, hard for opponents to break.
