Move 6 of 6
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 (Giuoco Piano) or 3...Nf6 (Two Knights Defense) 4.d3 (modern Giuoco Pianissimo) or 4.Ng5 (Fried Liver Attack line)
Core Ideas
Italian Game targets the f7 square, the weakest point in Black's starting position, with the bishop on c4 plus knight on g5. Romantic era favorite due to fast development plus attacking chances. Modern version (Giuoco Pianissimo with d3) is more positional and often used at modern top level like Carlsen and Caruana.
Plan for White
Control the center with e4 pawn and bishop-knight development. If opponent plays slow, target f7. If position is closed, play d3 + Nbd2 + Nf1-g3 (knight rerouting typical of modern Italian).
Plan for Black
Mirror development with Bc5 (Giuoco Piano) or Nf6 (Two Knights). Anticipate Ng5 attack on f7 with well-timed h6. Long-term: build pawn majority on queenside.
Grandmaster Tier Context
T1 Beginner through T5 Master. Italian is the first opening recommended by Grandmaster coaches for new players because of clear development principles plus educational open positions. Modern Italian also appears in GM repertoire.
