Core Ideas
Ruy Lopez pressures the c6 knight (defender of the e5 pawn) with the bishop on b5. The theoretically richest opening in chess, analysed since the 16th century and systematically developed from the 19th century onward. Ruy Lopez gives White long-term pressure on the center and queenside while safe for castling. Kasparov and Carlsen both consider Ruy Lopez the most ambitious opening for White.
Plan for White
Open the d-file plus pressure the center with c3-d4 push (Chigorin plan) or play positionally on queenside with a4 (Yates plan). Long-term goal: active bishop pair plus space advantage.
Plan for Black
Solidify e5 and avoid too many trades with Morphy Defense (a6). Long-term: control center with c5 and d6, counter-strike on queenside with c5-b4.
